PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
As the month of May approaches, our commu-nity becomes more visible in the streets, side-walks, and parks around our cities. The spring and summer months begin the agricultural cor-nucopia that surrounds us. This is a very impor-tant time for many local businesses, as migrant and seasonal workers that provide support as laborers in the fields and warehouses begin their journey. Why Should I become a member? Current Hispanic purchasing power is 8.5% of total U.S. purchasing power, but will reach 11% by 2010, when taking into account factors such as the nar-rowing Hispanic vs. overall U.S. income gap and the increase in the number of Hispanic households with earned income. U.S. Hispanic purchasing power has surged to nearly $700 billion and is projected to reach $1 trillion by 2010, nearly three times the overall national rate of consumer purchasing power over the past decade. Did You Know? The U.S. Latino population already equals the African American population and is poised to soon make up the single largest ethnic group in the country. In 2000, Latinos were 35.3 million strong, accounting for nearly 13 percent of the total U.S. population. By 2020, the Latino population is projected to double to 70 million, or 21 percent of the U.S. population, and by 2050, people of His-panic origin are projected to number more than 100 million. In fact, the number of Hispanics in the U.S. today is greater than the entire population of Canada, and is growing at a faster rate than the general population, more than 60 percent in the last decade. U.S. Latinos are the fifth-largest Spanish-speaking community in the world, behind those of Mexico, Colombia, Spain and Argen-tina. Facts on U.S. Latinos from the U.S. Census Bureau |
